Aquatic-terrestrial linkages across seasons

Dr. Eva Cereghetti, Eawag

Heure

11:00 - 12:00

Fluxes of material are ubiquitous in nature, and they can create important interdependencies between vastly different habitats. An emblematic example of material moving across and connecting ecosystem is leaf litter. Originating from terrestrial plants, leaf litter can often enter freshwater streams, where the material is decomposed and eaten by stream microbes and macroinvertebrates. Like many other material fluxes, the fall of leaves into stream is strongly seasonal, yet its effect on the ecosystems can spread out throughout the whole year. Eva Cereghetti will present her research on leaf litter dynamics across forests and streams, highlighting the importance of the phenological context of ecological processes.
